In Our Nature

Earthn is a habitat design studio exploring how thoughtful spaces, objects, and practices can help people live more fully in our nature.

We believe that creating healthy habitats is in our nature. As Bill Mollison said, "Everyone gardens." Not just the landscapes around us, but the homes we inhabit, the food we grow, the rituals we keep, and the communities we cultivate. The quality of these environments shapes how we feel, how we connect, and how we move through the world.

Rooted in permaculture design philosophy, we explore the living connection between head, heart, and hand - transforming natural materials into enduring tools, spaces, and objects that invite presence and care. From land to workshop, our work is shaped by traditional craft, resilient design, and the quiet alchemy of turning ideas into forms that simplify life, inspire the heart, and nourish the soul.

We exist to help people slow down, reconnect with nature, and co-create habitats - indoors and out - that feel intentional, grounded, and alive. Through products, education, and design, we share practical ways to cultivate a more intentional relationship with home, land, and self. Whether it's a garden structure, a handcrafted object, a backyard habitat, or a simple daily ritual, we believe thoughtful design can reconnect us to what matters most.

Our Story

Earthn began as Land by Hand, a permaculture design & build company with a strong focus on hands-on skill education for permaculture, slow living, and practical self-reliance.

Over the years, we've explored farms, workshops, homesteads, and communities, learning from growers, builders, artisans, and everyday people who live closely with the land. Through these experiences, a deeper understanding emerged: permaculture is not simply a gardening method. It is a way of seeing relationships, understanding patterns, and designing systems that support life.

That perspective continues to guide everything we do.

Earthn is the next evolution of our journey. A place where ideas start as seeds and grow into being, knowledge becomes practice, and design becomes a tool for cultivating a more regenerative and down-to-earth way of life.

What We Mean by Habitat

To us, habitat is more than a place.

It is the living relationships between people, their 'environment' and all other forms of life around them. A habitat includes the home, garden, workshop, landscape, neighborhood, and daily rituals that shape our lives. It influences our wellbeing, creativity, resilience, and sense of belonging.

When we design for habitat, we design for life itself. This means creating spaces that invite connection. Building objects that endure. Supporting biodiversity. Honoring local materials. Encouraging stewardship. And making choices that improve both human and ecological health over time.

Grounded Design

Earthn is based on a small family farmstead in NW Wisconsin near the Twin Cities and shaped by the rhythms of the Upper Midwest.

We live this work every day as designers, builders, gardeners, parents, and lifelong students of the natural world. The ideas we share are informed by lived experience, ongoing practice, and a commitment to continual learning.

Carrying the Perma-Culture Forward

The name Earthn reflects our belief that humans are not separate from nature but participants within Nature. The wisdom of the past still has much to teach us. Traditional skills, ecological knowledge, and community-centered ways of living remain deeply relevant today.

Our goal is not to recreate the past, but to carry its lessons forward. To design habitats that help people thrive while supporting the health of the land around them. Because creating places that nurture life is not a trend. It's in our nature.
